A Northwest lodge built to feel like it had always belonged to the forest — and named Best of Show the year it was finished.
Massive timber beams, lava-rock fireplaces, and twenty-foot cedar ceilings — strength and permanence, the moment you walk in.
Having moved to Bend from Southern California, the owners wanted a home that fit the way they'd come here to live: close to the forest, open to the light, and built to last. They found a lot in the Tree Farm, bordering the Deschutes National Forest and Shevlin Park, and partnered with Homeland Design to shape a single-story Northwest lodge that sat quietly on the land and gave them privacy.
Turning those plans into a home fell to Sunrise — and the timing made it a test. Ground broke in late 2019, with completion aimed at the July 2020 COBA Tour of Homes, just as the pandemic arrived. Through material delays and job-site limits, the crew finished on time, and the home went on to win Best Feature for its lava-rock walls and fireplaces, Best Kitchen, Best Master Suite, and Best of Show in its category.
The details are where it lives: three natural-stone fireplaces in lava and Montana mossy rock, hand-honed double-thick stone countertops, a seven-by-twelve-foot granite island, distressed beams carrying from the entry through the great room to the covered patio, and keystone shapes tucked into the rockwork as quiet signatures throughout.
"It has been much more than just building out a set of plans. So much of what we love is a result of this team's vision and their execution."
